Note on Orthography

edit

The basis of the orthography used in this work is recommended by the Hon. Mr. Pickering in his treatise on the Indian languages; and which employs the vowel sounds as used by most nations in Europe, as in the following examples, viz.

  • ă as in făther, făst,
  • a as in fall, fawn,
  • e as in they, there,
  • i as in machine, unique,
  • o as in hope, robe,
  • u as in rule, or like oo,
  • y as in you, or like ee.

The short sound of the vowel is expressed by the character ﬞ over each; as ĕ in met, ĭ in pĭn, ŏ in nŏt; and the nasal sounds by the cedilla; under each. The dipthongs are

  • ai as i in pine,
  • iu as u in mule.

Note: This is no longer standard Seneca orthography. If you know how to write it in standard modern Seneca orthography, please help by converting the text below. Please see LanguageGeeks.com for information on modern Seneca orthography.
