Rename index namespace

If the 'index' name is not appropriate, why don't you change it? on fr.ws we use 'livre' which means 'book' ThomasV 19:12, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

The name "index" isnt a major problem. It doesnt really bother me. If this proposal has technical problems, or the community doesnt like it, then I might propose that English Wikisource uses a different name for that namespace, but there isnt a lot of benefits of merely changing the name. I don't understand this propostion, and what it aims to do. IMHO it creates some problems while trying to solve others. I see a benefit in the fact that Indexes have a different name than Pages. These are different things, in order not to confuse people, they should have different names.

Also people are getting accustomed to a solution which works. Changing it will demand a lot of work, which will not make it simplier for people to adopt it. Yann 22:18, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

This proposition aims to simplify the transcription system - less installation and less to comprehend.

An index and the pagescans in the same namespace is similar to the way we break up large texts with subpages ("Example" and "Example/Chapter 1"): the top level is the doorway to the rest of the pages.

We have twelve (12) domains set up so far; there are 56 sub-domains at the moment according to meta:Wikisource, so we have another 44 to set up. This takes too long. If we add this functionality to the extension soon, those 44 will not need any migration, and if we build it to use the Image namespace, there is no need for any site requests at all. "this takes too long" has nothing to do with technical considerations. setting up a new namespace takes 30 seconds if you have the correct permissions. the reason why it takes so long is that admins believe that it is sufficient to write their requests in bugzilla and passively wait... This proposal has my enthuiastic support. The idea of having XXXX as an index, and XXXX/1, XXXX/2, XXXX/3 etc as page scans, has a certain elegance to it, plus there is the pragmatic benefit of being able to move the entire structure with a single operation. But I really dislike the Image: namespace option. For now I'll just point out a single objection, that by adopting it we are forcing every Wiki that uses it to permanently turn its back on ever allowing image uploads in future. Using the "Image" namespace will not prevent image upload. Upload would still occur as normal, however the text page for an image would be filled with transcription text instead of, or in addition to, an {{Information}} block. This already occurs on Commons at times; people transcribe the text of an image on the Image page. commons:Special:Longpages doesnt show the image namespace so we cant see which Image pages have been (ab)used in this manner, however Google pulls up some examples of this: commons:Image:Amphitheatrum sapientiae aeternae - Alchemist's Laboratory.jpg, commons:Image:ApartheidSignEnglishAfrikaans.jpg and commons:Image:AU Burns Canberra.jpg. I support this proposal, but

I oppose using the Image namespace. See Image:Peregrinaçam 25 159v-165v.djvu to an example of a big description page on Commons and pages containing large amount of text; it may cause problems to readers and/or newbies on ProofreadPage extension

I oppose using the ScanSet prefix since some works aren't scans. s:pt:Galeria:Relatório Final da CPMI dos Correios - Volume I.djvu contains a report from a CPMI related to the w:mensalão scandal originally realeased in .pdf format (locally uploaded since I known that it is a public domain work [according to 9610, Art. 8º, IV] but Commons still don't have policies regarding PD raw texts in image files)

I don't like using Page for transcriptions and Index pages, but I don't oppose to it

btw It may need a standardized namespace numbering (currently Page is 104 @ fr, en, hy, la, ru, sv, he; 102 @ de; 106 @ pt; 108 @ it; 100 @ el, sl; see also bugzilla:7521#c1-c3; bugzilla:7534 is related to it) and some $wgNamespaceAliases to make the unified namespace name in English as a redirect to the translated word (like in fr:Category:A and others)
