Welcome
editHello Koavf, welcome to the multilingual Wikisource! Thanks for your interest in the project; we hope you'll enjoy the community and your work here.
This wiki is the original Wikisource wiki, originally hosting works in many languages. The larger collections have been spawned into separate projects, leaving this wiki to serve as a central collaboration point, and as an environment where works without a language subdomain can be started. Refer to our languages list to see which languages still reside on this wiki. You can find a list of the separate language projects on the main page or here and you may want to look at the our coordination page for limitations on placing certain works on the separate language projects.
Most questions and discussions about the community are in the Scriptorium.
The Community Portal lists tasks you can help with if you wish. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my talk page!
DP Connection
editHi, I noticed you edited Wikisource:Wikisource and Project Gutenberg. Do you have any connection with Project Gutenberg? I am a proofreader that has drifted over from pg and feel that a collaboration between Distributed Proofreaders and Wikisource could be very valuable re proofreader development. I am appalled at how little proofreading seems to have been done at Wikisource. I know there are a lot of frustrated proofreaders at DP who want practice. It seems an ideal to advertise Wikisource to novice proofreaders. I wouldn't know who/how to approach at DP... Any thoughts? Zoeannl 05:41, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Zoeannl: I am also registered at DP as well and I'd be very happy to see content pass between our communities. As for who to contact, part of the difficulty is that there are several distinct DP communities... What have you been thinking? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 05:45, 19 April 2015 (UTC)
- I've just found this forum post on DP-what's really interesting is that it took months for anyone to mention Wikisource. I put in my 2 cents and had an immediate reply telling how much better the PP support is now. Kinda missing the point. And maybe part of the problem? --Zoeannl (talk) 09:31, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
- DP and WS Excuse my delay in getting back. If you want to reach me more directly, e-mail works best. I think it's a little silly for our two communities to not work together: it's virtually trivial to take a text from one and post it to the other anyway. I've posted there as well. How were you told that DP is better than WS? Through a private message? What is the best way to contact you? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 22:20, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

Empty categories
editWe let them stay if a language has moved to a subdomain. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 11:25, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Ooswesthoesbes: Can you explain the thinking there? I don't see a policy page on this. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 20:27, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
- There is no written policy page on that. It is based on what always has been done. The main reason is incoming external links that might point to these categories/main pages. So, they are kept as a placeholder to inform that they have moved to their own subdomain. Pretty much the same idea as pages on the Incubator like these. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 09:43, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Ooswesthoesbes: Makes sense. We should delete the redundant texts, tho. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 09:46, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- Yes. La Bibia piemontèisa however is an exception, as the creator of those pages has linked it from several websites and requested me to let that page stay. It might be easy to create a separate category for all pages and categories that should be kept and not deleted. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 09:48, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Ooswesthoesbes: Hm. That is a problem: incoming links... Not sure what the solution is here, as hosting content at mul.ws and an individual subdomain is clearly a bad idea... Thanks. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 09:51, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- Basically, the contents is only hosted on the individual subdomain. Only about two pages (main page, main category) are usually kept as soft redirects. With the Piemontese Bible main page being an exception. --Ooswesthoesbes (talk) 09:52, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi,
I am unsure if setting a language for author pages is a good idea.
These pages (maybe not in this case) may be multilingual. Especially for multilingiual and/or well-known and widely translated authors. Ankry (talk) 11:52, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Ankry: That's not bad thinking--the interface should be multinlingual and the page should be set to

- Capri (Rumantsch) and Capri (Staff, 1922) {Polish)
- Noc (Lower Sorbian) and poem with the same title from Uśmiechy godzin (tomik) (Polish, not processed yet)

jQuery for deleting napwikisource pages
editHi Koavf!
I made this quick jQuery to check if a page here on the multilingual Wikisource has already been exported to napwikisource.
$(document).ready ( function () {
function findNap() {
$.getJSON("https://nap.wikisource.org/w/api.php?callback=?", {
action: 'query',
prop: 'pageprops',
format: 'json',
titles: mw.config.get('wgPageName')
}, function ( a ) {
$.each( a.query.pages, function (k, v) {
if ( k != -1 ) {
$("#bodyContent").prepend("<div class='error' style='color:green;font-size:larger;'>This page exists in the Neapolitan Wikisource. <a href='https://wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=" + mw.config.get('wgPageName') + "&action=delete&wpReason=Moved+to+[[:nap:" + mw.config.get('wgPageName') + "]]'>Delete now</a></div>");
} else {
$("#bodyContent").prepend("<div class='error' style='font-size:larger;'>This page doesn't exist in the Neapolitan Wikisource yet!</div>");
}
});
});
}
findNap();
});
If you put it in User:Koavf/common.js, it will insert a prominent text telling whether or not a page has already been imported to napwikisource. If a page does exist, it will give a quick link to delete it with a prefilled summary linking to the new location of the page.
Hope you'll find this useful! Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:07, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: That is beautiful. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 16:08, 21 August 2019 (UTC)
- Just discovered something – it doesn't work on pages in the Author namespace, because Author is not set as an alias for Autore there. Just so you're aware. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:29, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: I'm not seeing any notice here. E.g. I just went to our local 'A Morte and even tho nap:'A Morte also exists, nothing notified me that the newly-imported version exists. I have refreshed, bypassed the cache, and even restarted my computer since I added this script but no luck. Any recommendations? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:00, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- So sorry about that, I forgot one crucial part when I pasted the script in here – actually executing the function! I added it in this edit. The text will display underneath the title on every single page (even special pages, talk pages, in editing view, history view, etc. Hence why it's a very quick jQuery, hehe). - That's exactly what I was going for! 😁 Jon Harald Søby (talk) 21:17, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- PS! If you use the delete link the script generates, it will automatically include a link to the pages' current locations on napwikisource. Useful if for some reason there are external links pointing to something here on oldwikisource, that way the delete log will point to the correct place. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 22:27, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: I have used that link several times--very helpful. Unfortunately, it does not recognize titles beginning with <'> (likely due to its meaning in scripting languages) and unfortunately Neapolitan has a huge amount of titles that begin with it but this is a very helpful start. We have about 10,000 pages here under Category:Napulitano, so there's a lot to remove and this script is very handy. If you can somehow modify it to recognize leading <'>s, that would be fantastic. (My ECMA/JavaScript skills are very basic.) —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 23:11, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
- Ah, sorry about that! Yeah, you're right. This diff should fix that!
- By the way, do you want some help with the deletions? I can start in the opposite end if you'd like. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 07:07, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

- I think almost all deletions are done! jQuery can be quite powerful. You're a power user if there ever was one, hehe – I would really recommend looking into learning some simple jQuery. It can make things very efficient, especially repetetive tasks.
- Anyways, I've identified some more pages that need to be imported to napwikisource. I don't have the importer bit any more, so if you could do them that would be swell. They are listed in User:Jon Harald Søby/napwikisource. I also think Ruthven should have a look at the ones I suspected of being in Italian and decide what should be done with them. hiwikisource
editHi! Could you help me delete the hiwikisource pages from here? There are so many of them. I have again made a jQuery to help. You can just copy everything from User:Jon Harald Søby/common.js to User:Koavf/common.js. The script will delete a page once you open it if (a) it's in Category:हिन्दी and (b) the page exists in the Hindi Wikisource. I use a Firefox extension called Snap Links (also exists for Chrome) that lets you open multiple tabs at a time, making the process very fast.
Note that I'm simultaneously moving all pages on the Hindi Wikisource with my bot, from Latin numerals to Hindi numerals (but it's slow due to a bug in Pywikibot), so for some pages it will not delete the page and give the same red warning that "this page doesn't exist in the Hindi Wikisource yet". You can just ignore those for now – once the initial round of deletions is done I will update the jQuery to also delete the pages that have been moved by the bot. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:25, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: This is great. Note that Page:विद्यापति ठाकुर की पद्यावली.djvu/45 hasn't been moved to hi.ws yet. Seems like they are missing lots of templates, too. Are you doing that work? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 18:54, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, there are several pages missing that weren't categorized properly. After we're done with this main round of deletions, I will check the <pagelist /> tags for all deleted indexes and export over the remaining missing pages. (As you can see, I developed the script a bit further than what I described – even while deleting 100 pages at a time, doing that 280 times in a row got too tedious …) As for templates there isn't really any good tools for checking which templates are used across a given set of pages at the moment, so I think I will try to make a script for that. I could actually turn it into a generalized Pywikibot script actually, I looked at the API and it looks rather straight-forward. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 19:00, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Jon Harald Søby: s:hi:Special:WantedTemplates? or is there something I'm missing. MediaWiki does the work for you. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:06, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
- Oh yes, that's a great point. For this case that should work, once the special page is updated (I'm sure there are many more wanted templates than the 11 currently listed). I was thinking of something like "what are the most used templates in category X" – I don't know of any tools for checking that. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 19:09, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

editPlease restore Template:Missing image/i18n ASAP. I don’t know why you deleted it, but it’s used by Template:Missing image on dozens of pages, which now all show Lua errors. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:58, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: Got it. Sorry for that: I was deleting a lot of weird spam from a globally-blocked bot account. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 01:28, 3 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! Could you please restore the rest of the deleted pages as well and then mark Template:Missing image/i18n for translation? It looks like the undeletion is quite more work than the deletion… —Tacsipacsi (talk) 01:16, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users
editHi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Question
editHello Koavf! I'm taking part in the discussion Requests for new languages/Wikisource Old Tupi and I have a question as you may see here: when attempting to create a new Wikisource, how to deal with bilingual texts? Only focus in the target language, or transcribe everything? I'm in this roadblock because the majority of the texts in this historical language (that some groups are attempting to revive) are bilingual. Thanks, Erick Soares3 (talk) 09:19, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Erick Soares3: Great question. You are not obliged to put the content of both languages on here, but this is a great place for multilingual texts. E.g. I started (years ago, nowhere finished) Festival Romanistica. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 09:21, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! And there's also that, if the project survives and becomes a tool for the language revival, what is in Portuguese may be translated into Old Tupi in the future. There's any way to automatically move transcriptions from one Wikisource into another? This work fits better in the Old Tupi project (and I think that there are more works in the Portuguese version that fits the project). Now, theres any equivalent here to the Template:Multicol? Thanks, Erick Soares3 (talk) 09:34, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
- There is a transwiki process and bots can do this pretty easily, but I am ignorant of how to do it myself. In many Wikisources, there is a
Translation
namespace for making new translations, but that's usually into the language itself, not from the language into another one. If the community at a new Wikisource decides they want it to have full bilingual support, that would be up to them, of course. As you can see, {{Multicol}} exists locally, so I'm not sure of your question. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 09:37, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

editHello, could you approve my latest filter-blocked attempt at creating A Confession of Faith? (The text is bilingual in English and Massachusett, so I assume it belongs on Multilingual Wikisource.) Thank you. 98.170.164.88 10:04, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

editHello, Koavf! Thank you very much for your edit. Since you are a native English speaker and I am not, it's good if you correct my not very good English in my messages addressed to a wide range of readers, and you are right - those messages should be easily understandable for others. So your edit was fine, don't worry, and you needn't apologize for such edits anyway. --Nigmont (talk) 21:26, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

- Thanks for undeleting it! I wish admins could protect pages like the sandbox, the category of pages for speedy deletion etc. in a way that stops themselves from accidentally deleting them, as this is a problem again and again, across wikis. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:31, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hm, yeah it's best to not delete it, but really if any page could be deleted and there would be no bad consequences, it's this one. Agreed that it should never have been deleted, obviously. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:49, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
