Hello, Doug, a Welcome for you too  :)

Hello DeirdreAnne, welcome to the multilingual Wikisource! Thanks for your interest in the project; we hope you'll enjoy the community and your work here.

This wiki is the original Wikisource wiki, originally hosting works in many languages. The larger collections have been spawned into separate projects, leaving this wiki to serve as a central collaboration point, and as an environment where works without a language subdomain can be started. Refer to our languages list to see which languages still reside on this wiki. You can find a list of the separate language projects on the main page or here and you may want to look at the our coordination page for limitations on placing certain works on the separate language projects.

Most questions and discussions about the community are in the Scriptorium.

The Community Portal lists tasks you can help with if you wish. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my talk page!

Hello Doug,

Here is a broom...

...and lots of buckets...

...Will you win against the spammers?

Congrats and welcome!  :) --Zyephyrus (talk) 08:58, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unblock request

edit

Hello Doug. I see you've blocked Morphypnos (talkcontribsglobal contribs) for abusing multiple accounts, but he's not the same user as Hannahkell12 (talkcontribsglobal contribs). He's a French user (see this overview) and he is currently fighting cross-wiki vandalism in irc:cvn-sw. He only reverted Hannahkell12's vandalism on this project. Could you please unblock him? Thanks in advance, Mathonius (talk) 17:44, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh sorry! I'll fix it right now. Thanks for pointing out my error.--Doug.(talk contribs) 17:57, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the unblock. However, his IP address is currently autoblocked, could you unblock #917 as well? Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 18:07, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Done. --Zyephyrus (talk) 18:28, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ugh, sorry again. You'd think I'd be smarter than that, I've done this for a while other places. :-( --Doug.(talk contribs) 18:36, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

About interesting things: mediawiki modernisation

edit

Hello Doug, if you wish to hear more about this, here is what ThomasV said when creating it.

[Translated by me—please be indulgent for the mistakes, they are mine, not theirs.]

It seems to me inappropriate to add heavy & all trãspose, trãsposé, trãsposée, trãsposer, trãsposition, etc.. Trãspos- as a spelling, is it possible? Cdlt, Vigneron * discut. September 18, 2009 at 10:21 (UTC)

I know it is heavy, but note that it is still infinitely less cumbersome to write these words once and for all in a dictionary, rather than repeat them at every occurrence of the word, which was, let me remind you, the original intention of modernizers. I consider that I have fulfilled my part of the contract. To write an engine combination would be quite difficult, I believe ThomasV September 18, 2009 at 10:56 (UTC)
Yes, Thomas, the modernizers who had an initial intention may thank you very much indeed, although I have only this small model {{merci}} at my disposal to express it :). I want to point that Thomas took the necessary time to observe, listen, and understand what I was trying to do, and the tool he ended up building proves the quality of the listening and the observing not less than the creativity to conceive the tool that would be appropriate. - Zyephyrus September 18, 2009 at 11:33 (UTC)
Ok, so I'll add it. I just wanted to avoid entering words if there was an easier way. In addition, the dictionary may grow very rapidly, is not it a problem?
For conjugations, on wiktionary, we have Wikt: Model: fr-conj (see Wikt: Appendix: French Conjugation: love). I do not know if this can serve you.
As Zyephyrus, thank you very much. You have already done much and I am a perfectionist vile en: template: blink Cdlt, Vigneron * discut. September 18, 2009 at 11:40 (UTC)
Dictionary will become very large, it is expected. I explained somewhere (perhaps in the scriptorium) it will not be possible to continue to offer a link to "modernize" on all pages, the day or the dictionary will be too big. Indeed, we will have to generate micro-dictionaries in advance, for every page to modernize (and only this page then) ThomasV September 18, 2009 at 12:26 (UTC)

  • Thanks Zyephyrus! Was this related to my comments earlier today on la.ws regarding macrons, etc.? Or something else? I'm not sure I understand what was going on, what was the background? A "dictionary" within wikisource? "modernizers"? Did the modernizers wanted to see the work with modern spellings, etc? Is this still going on? I'm very interested to understand it all but I think I need more context.--Doug.(talk contribs) 21:39, 9 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see that maybe it's a reference to the link on my user page to MediaWiki:Modernisation.js. I am not really familiar with this, it was mentioned to me once, probably by Candalua or VIGNERON or maybe by ThomasV, so I linked it but don't have the history.--Doug.(talk contribs) 09:34, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Starting WikiSource Projects in Indian languages.

edit

Dear Doug,

Hello.

I working on Wikimedia Projects in Indian languages. As I see, Hindi has been verified as a language eligible for Wikisource Project. Yet 'hi.wikisource.org' is a non-entity when Hindi is the national language of India. Hindi material is available in one or two categories on general Wikisource.

Indian regional languages such as Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, etc, have a separate presence on Wikisource.

Can you please help me in getting this status for Hindi. Also other Indian languages such as Urdu?

Regards, Hindustanilanguage (talk) 06:47, 20 September 2013 (UTC).Reply

Thanks

Thanks for your work Doug, appreciated, The work must be done here since all the texts are in Neapolitan. There is (still) no Neapolitan Wikisource, so we are building up the project here with the mul.ws rules. However I did all this mess here as a newcomer (sorry), and now I wanted to repair it, so it was very helpful somebody gave some minutes to this task. Thanks!! --C.R. (talk) 07:47, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Oh, thanks for the explanation on the language! Where is the rule or information on the technical issue with the name at commons? I was about to upload the djvu to commons but couldn't find that naming convention issue and since the move of the index and pages is going to be a lot of work, I wanted to make sure it's absolutely necessary.--Doug.(talk contribs) 14:21, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ah, you are talking about 'o luciano d''o rre, isn't it? Then, the fact is that commons does not allow to upload files with double apostrophes '' (software restriction: just try), while mul.ws allows you to upload any file with any name. But I would be happy to keep this as it is here. When a neapolitan wikisource is created then we can ask again if the index re-link functionality has been worked out. I would not like to lose the green-verifications. --C.R. (talk) 14:45, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. OK, I uploaded the djvu to commons:File:’O luciano d’’o Rre.djvu per a suggestion in the upload error message but feel free to move it if needed (or if you need me to, I can move it). Manual relinking can be done, easier with a bot, but for something this size, not too bad. But I haven't got time right now. I'll put a message on the file talk page not delete without relinking. --Doug.(talk contribs) 15:13, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Perfect! Do you think it is worthy to incorporate this functionality within the mediawiki software? (maybe it should be part of the proofread extension) I'll try to submit a request when I have some time. --C.R. (talk) 15:38, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Do you mean the ability to link an index to a different filename? That would be something to discuss with the current developers of the Proofread Page extension.--Doug.(talk contribs) 15:46, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
See this request for a tool on en.ws: en:Wikisource:Bot_requests#Generic_re-titler_for_Index:_namespace_.28aka_Special:Move-work.29.--Doug.(talk contribs) 15:51, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that was it. I'll keep learning. --C.R. (talk) 17:47, 15 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help with harassment by cs.wikisource admins

edit

Hi, I see you are admin of this wiki. On the local Village pump there's written: "This is the central location for discussing issues with Wikisource, and the place to ask for help." So I posted a plea for help there but noone replied. Would you please have a look? I'm being harassed by cs.wikisource admins, I was banned indef but I never did anything wrong on the wiki at all. Thanks in advance. --Auvajs (talk) 17:38, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Is it meant to be your subpage?--Jusjih (talk) 04:23, 9 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, must have been an import test that I never cleaned up. I can be deleted. I can't do it right now but I will soon, unless you do it first. Feel free. Thanks.--Doug.(talk contribs) 19:52, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I took the liberty of deleting it myself as I had a moment (note to anyone not from around mul.ws, we have so few admins that deleting your own user pages is non-controversial).--Doug.(talk contribs) 12:58, 3 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Why do you suggest that this book is copyrighted in Germany? And. if it is not, why you uploaded it here and not to Commons? Ankry (talk) 20:10, 26 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Oh, I see: uploaded in 2011. But any reason against moving it now? Ankry (talk) 20:23, 26 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

It could move to Commons now I believe. May have issues putting any transcription on de.ws though as it's a Nazi work.--Doug.(talk contribs) 19:54, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users

edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)
